Beneath the shadow of the ANA Crowne Plaza Hiroshima stands Kokutaiji Temple. Its history whispers tales of resilience and faith.

Kokutaiji Temple a Buddhist temple was originally founded in 1594. An ambitious project of the esteemed monk Ekei. It was built on a site chosen for its strategic location. It offered a commanding view of the coastline. This strategic placement was important for its role in the region.

The temple flourished. It played a significant role in the area’s religious and political life. Kokutaiji Temple became a pivotal center. It served as a meeting point for powerful figures. The temple even housed the burial place of the powerful Mori clan lord. Sadly much of this temple was lost. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 destroyed Kokutaiji Temple. Every building was completely obliterated. The temple’s remains are a poignant reminder of the destructive power of war. The temple’s foundation stones and the surrounding area were severely damaged.

However the story doesn’t end there. The ashes of Kokutaiji Temple are not only found in the ruins but also in the hearts of the people. The spirit of the temple has been moved to a new location in Hiroshima. It stands today a testament to the enduring power of faith.

The remnants of the old Kokutaiji Temple aren’t entirely lost. A small part of it survives. It’s called the Former Kokutaiji Temple Love Pond. This small pond and its surrounding land are all that remain. It is a designated historical site of Hiroshima. This small piece of the past is a heartbreaking but powerful memory. It shows the strength of the human spirit to not give up.

Kokutaiji Temple’s current location also has significance. It’s near the White God Society. This society is associated with the temple. The White God Society’s stone monument stands as another significant feature. It’s a striking reminder of a place that will never be forgotten. The stones show how religious life continued even after the war. The temple’s rebirth symbolizes Hiroshima’s resurgence. It embodies hope for a better future. Kokutaiji Temple a story etched in stone and water. It’s a story that continues to be written.
