Is this shrine really floating on water? That’s the question that pops into the minds of many visitors as they first lay eyes on Itsukushima Shrine. Right here, before you, stands one of Japan’s most extraordinary sights. Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a breathtaking spectacle where architecture and nature intertwine in perfect harmony. The shrine’s origins supposedly date back to the 6th century. But it was Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful 12th-century leader, who envisioned the shrine in its current splendor. He sought to create a “palace on the sea”. And indeed, the shrine’s vermilion buildings, connected by elegant corridors, seem to float upon the tides of the Seto Inland Sea. The shrine is dedicated to three Shinto deities: Ichikishimahime no mikoto, Tagorihime no mikoto, and Tagitsuhime no mikoto. These goddesses, daughters of the storm god Susano-o no Mikoto, are revered as protectors of the sea. The most iconic feature of Itsukushima Shrine is undoubtedly its majestic “floating” torii gate. This towering structure, made of decay-resistant camphor wood, stands tall even as the tides ebb and flow. At low tide, you can walk right up to the gate. But as the tide rises, the torii appears to float effortlessly on the water, creating a truly magical sight. Itsukushima Shrine is a testament to Japan’s deep reverence for nature. The ebb and flow of the tides, the forested slopes of Mount Misen in the distance, and the shrine’s elegant architecture all blend seamlessly. This creates a captivating scene. Itsukushima Shrine is not merely a place of worship. It is a place where the spiritual and the natural merge in breathtaking beauty.
