You might be surprised to find a Shinto shrine so close to the bustling city center. The Kibitsu Shrine, nestled among the modern buildings of Hiroshima, is more than just a place of worship. It’s a portal to the past, a reminder of the resilience of the people of Hiroshima. Built in 806, the shrine is dedicated to Kibitsuhiko-no-mikoto, a powerful deity who was said to be a son of Emperor Keikō and the conqueror of the Kingdom of Kibi. It was designated as the ichinomiya or the most important shrine of the former Bingo Province. Despite its history, the Kibitsu Shrine was nearly lost in 1332. During the violent clashes of the Nanboku-chō period, the shrine was burned down by the forces of Ashikaga Takauji. The shrine was rebuilt and survived another destructive incident during the Sengoku Period when it was nearly demolished by the Oda clan. Today, however, the shrine stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Japanese people. The structure, a National Important Cultural Property, boasts an impressive wooden Komainu that once stood as a powerful guardian at the entrance. Sadly, one of the pair has gone missing. You can find the remaining Komainu at the Tokyo National Museum. As you walk through the grounds, you’ll be reminded of the strength and resilience of the people of Hiroshima. This shrine has survived centuries, weathering wars, destruction, and reconstruction. As you leave the Kibitsu Shrine, take a moment to appreciate its history and the enduring spirit of the Japanese people who have preserved it for generations.
