Hidden within the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, Shuangfeng Temple whispers tales of ancient mysteries. Shuangfeng Temple holds a secret. It’s tied to Shanghai’s reputation as a “magical city”. This secret lies in a mystical well, the “Demon Subduing Well”. Shuangfeng Temple is one of Shanghai’s three famous temples. Its history stretches back to the Three Kingdoms period. Yet, its mystique isn’t solely due to its age. It stems from the well it guards. This well, said to lead to the underworld, supposedly holds unspeakable beings and countless grieving souls. Legends say that on nights with a full moon, eerie cries emanate from the well’s depths. These cries sound like calls from another world.

“Have you heard of Jing’an Temple’s well?” a young apprentice once asked his master. The master’s face darkened. “Speak no more of it,” he warned. “That well seals away things beyond comprehension.” The apprentice persisted, mentioning the sinking of the Dongfang zhi Xing. The master stopped him. “Shanghai is called a ‘magical city’ for a reason,” he said. “Many secrets remain hidden.” The apprentice shivered. He felt a chill, as if unseen eyes were watching him from the shadows. Shuangfeng Temple’s Demon Subduing Well connects to Beijing’s Locked Dragon Well. Both are ancient sites, holding power beyond human understanding.

In 1958, during Beijing’s urban renovations, some challenged the Locked Dragon Well’s mystique. This led to a sudden flood, appearing and disappearing rapidly. It left behind fear and unanswered questions. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japanese soldiers tried to move the well’s chains. A terrifying roar echoed. The attempt failed. Those soldiers vanished without a trace, their names erased from records. Shuangfeng Temple’s Demon Subduing Well is like Shanghai’s Locked Dragon Well. However, it seals away more than just a dragon. It seals a path to the underworld. On certain days, strange sounds rise from the well’s depths. They are neither human nor animal, but an otherworldly language. These sounds hint at the well’s connection to the underworld.

Legends say Shuangfeng Temple doesn’t only guard a gateway to the underworld. It also shelters dragon descendants. These immortal beings chose to remain on earth to protect the seal. They are said to perform rituals to strengthen the seal. On clear nights, a golden light sometimes rises from the well. This is believed to be the dragon descendants at work. During these rituals, a mystical force field surrounds Shuangfeng Temple. No ordinary person can approach. The young apprentice was captivated. He imagined the magical city, a place where reality and illusion intertwined.
