Hakata Station first opened its doors on December 11, 1889. Though the original station was 600 meters north of where we stand now. Imagine a small tram transporting the Hakata district’s few thousand residents.
The station underwent a massive reconstruction completed in 2011. This project prepared for the Kyushu Shinkansen extension. The new building includes a Hankyu Department Store. It was their first Kyushu branch. Tokyu Hands also opened their first Kyushu store here.
Hakata Station connects multiple lines. There are regional lines and national lines like the Shinkansen. The Fukuoka subway also stops here. The Sanyo Shinkansen runs east to Shin-Osaka. The Kyushu Shinkansen runs south to Kagoshima-chuo.
If you are using the Japan Rail Pass note that it doesn’t cover all Shinkansen services. The Nozomi and Mizuho services are not included. However, the Sakura, Hikari, and Kodama services are covered.
The Fukuoka City Subway symbol is a bolt of cloth. This design features the traditional Hakata-ori pattern. Hakata-ori is a woven silk textile.
In 2016, Hakata Station served 121,370 passengers daily. This ranked it first among JR Kyushu stations.
