The South Area of the East China University of Science and Technology’s Xuhui campus. A place steeped in history. A place of innovation. This area wasn’t always as it is today. It has witnessed a remarkable transformation. Let me tell you its story.
In 1952 a new chapter began. The East China Institute of Chemical Technology was established. It was formed from the chemical engineering departments of five prestigious universities. These were Jiaotong University Aurora University Utopia University Soochow University and Jiangnan University. This marked the creation of China’s first single-discipline chemical engineering institute. It was a bold step a testament to the nation’s ambition for scientific advancement. Its initial location was at 195 Zhengfa Road.
Growth was rapid. In 1953 the institute expanded. It incorporated the chemical engineering department of Shandong University of Technology. A new campus was planned. Construction began at 130 Meilong Road. By 1954 the move was complete. Around 3.85 million square meters were dedicated to this new facility. The move was a significant milestone. It demonstrated the institute’s expanding influence. More students were enrolled more research was undertaken.
The name changed in 1972. It became the Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology. This was a reflection of its growing prominence within Shanghai. Simultaneously its Southwest Branch was renamed the Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology’s Sichuan Branch. The following years saw the institute evolving. It continued to welcome new faculty and students. It started accepting students from the People’s Liberation Army in 1972. A sign of its growing contribution to national development.
The institute’s name reverted to East China Institute of Chemical Technology in 1980. In 1993 it underwent a further transformation. It became the East China University of Science and Technology. This transformation marked its evolution into a comprehensive institution. It expanded its offerings beyond chemical engineering. It incorporated a wider range of scientific and technological disciplines.
The South Area reflects this expansion. It is a crucial part of the main campus. The campus here is located at 130 Meilong Road. It houses most of the research facilities. This includes administrative offices Master’s and PhD students international exchange and language students. The university continuously grows and develops. It actively seeks partnerships around the world. It strives to nurture future generations of scientists. It welcomes visitors from around the globe. Its story continues to unfold. A constant evolution. An enduring commitment to progress. The South Area of East China University of Science and Technology is part of this ongoing journey. The spirit of ambition lives on within these walls.
