“Salt marshes or saline land” barely scratches the surface of what this area once was. Now, before us stands 华东理工大学奉贤校区A教. It is part of a campus with a rich, if somewhat recent, history. Let’s dive into the story of this place.

The university officially began using this Fengxian campus in September 2007. It accommodates first, second, and third-year undergraduates. Some graduate students also attend their first-year classes here.

The area where 华东理工大学奉贤校区A教 now stands has transformed significantly over the years. New buildings continue to emerge. The campus environment and facilities improve each year. Today, it is a vibrant place for learning and living.

But what about the land’s past? Construction of the Fengxian campus began in earnest in 2003. In December of that year, the Ministry of Education approved the construction of a new campus for East China University of Science and Technology in Fengxian. The site covers 1544 acres. It is located north of the Hangzhou Bay Tourist Vacation Area. It also sits west of the Shanghai Normal University Fengxian campus. The plan was to develop the campus in two phases with a total construction area of about 640,000 square meters. The total investment was approximately 1.8 billion yuan.

On April 8, 2004, the signing ceremony for the land requisition took place. By July 2004, local construction projects were underway. 华东理工大学奉贤校区A教 is approximately 43 kilometers from the Xuhui campus. The main route between them is the Shanghai-Jinshan Expressway. The south gate of the Fengxian campus is at 999 Haide Road. The north gate is on Haiquan Road. The west gate is on Nanhai Highway. The campus has an average elevation of just over 5 meters. The highest point is nearly 9 meters.

Interestingly, the land acquisition for the campus occurred in two phases. The first phase involved 800 acres and the second 744 acres. Much of the land was formerly used for aquaculture. Before the construction of the campus, the area consisted mainly of water ponds. These ponds were used by local villagers for breeding shrimp.

The university received official certification for the land in two stages. The first batch was approved on March 16, 2010. The final approval was given on October 22, 2013. This legally transferred the entire campus to East China University of Science and Technology.

East China University of Science and Technology also had a presence in this area long before the Fengxian campus was built. In the 1970s, the university established a “May 7th Cadre School” nearby. The school focused on growing rice. However, it was closed in April 1974.

From salt farms to a modern university campus, the area has undergone a dramatic transformation. Today, 华理工大学奉贤校区A教 is a thriving center of education. It is a testament to Shanghai’s dynamic growth.
