Three months. That’s all it took to build the mighty walls of Shanghai. That includes the North Gate. Imagine the sweat the hurried work. The North Gate Yanhaimen a formidable structure of tamped earth and black brick. It stood tall against the encroaching marshes. It was a guardian against pirates and invaders. A silent sentinel watching over the growing city.

The year was 1553. Coastal pirates were a constant threat. They weren’t just locals. Adventurers and traders from all corners of the world. They defied the Ming dynasty’s strict rules. They attacked wealthy settlements like Shanghai. So the North Gate was vital. It was one of six gates built as part of a defensive system. The eight to ten meter high walls provided security. The six meter deep moat made any attack difficult. Drawbridges could be raised at a moment’s notice.

After dark guards secured the North Gate with massive wooden bolts. Those who missed the curfew faced a grim choice. A bribe or a night’s wait. Outside the gate hung cages. They contained the heads of executed criminals. A sobering reminder of the consequences of defiance.

The North Gate wasn’t just about defence. It was a crucial gateway. People goods and boats passed through it daily. The North Gate linked the city to the outside world. As Shanghai grew the North Gate’s importance only increased. A new gate Zhangchuanmen or New North Gate was added in 1860. This eased access to the growing foreign settlements north of the city walls.

The North Gate stood for centuries. It witnessed Shanghai’s transformation. From a small market town to an international metropolis. It saw conflict and change. The North Gate a reminder of the past. A symbol of resilience and growth. The North Gate is gone now. The walls are demolished. But its story lives on. A testament to Shanghai’s rich and complex history. A history you can almost feel standing here today.
