This unique community center, crafted from repurposed shipping containers, stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of Shanghai’s migrant population. Donated by OOCL, these containers have been transformed into a dynamic space. They serve a multitude of purposes, from early childhood development programs to adult workshops and community gatherings. The design of 出入口（大教室） is all about flexibility. Four shipping containers combine to form a spacious classroom. This large area can be divided into two smaller learning spaces by a sliding room divider, doubling the functionality. The room divider, along with the cabinets lining the walls, are surfaced with whiteboard veneer. This allows them to transform into interactive learning surfaces, fostering creativity and collaboration within the vibrant space of 出入口（大教室）. Smaller nooks, created by the arrangement of the containers, offer dedicated areas for a library, a quiet play space, a computer area, and displays of student work. The furniture within 出入口（大教室） further enhances this adaptability. Easily stored away for community events, it can be rearranged into various configurations to suit both children and adults. Like the room dividers and cabinets, the furniture also features a whiteboard veneer. Even the original container doors play a role in the building’s sustainable design. Opened during winter months to maximize heat gain, they are closed in the summer to maintain a cool interior. Small holes drilled into the doors allow sunlight to dapple the floor, creating an ever-changing pattern of light within 出入口（大教室）. Large sliding doors connect the classroom to an outdoor playscape, extending the learning environment into the fresh air. The playscape is designed for creative play and adaptability. Curvilinear benches can be reconfigured into various shapes, fostering imaginative play and social interaction. A large chalkboard wall and portable play equipment maximize the use of the outdoor space. Even the excess corrugated metal from the container interiors has been repurposed as a security fence.
