A thousand fish heads. Can you imagine that aroma? Welcome to Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hiroshima a place steeped in history and resilience. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s a survivor a testament to the enduring spirit of Hiroshima. Originally built in 1733 in what was then called Kakomachi it stood strong until a devastating fire in 1798. The flames miraculously spared the shrine itself. Though its structure was damaged it was rebuilt in the following year at its current location. This relocation and rebuilding are commemorated annually during the Sumiyoshisan Festival. This vibrant festival features the traditional rowing of ceremonial boats on the Ota River a sight that echoes the shrine’s connection to seafaring traditions. Imagine dozens of men in happi coats rhythmically rowing through the water. The boats eventually reach the Atomic Bomb Dome where the Ota and Motoyasu Rivers meet a symbolic journey representing the city’s resilience. During the festival you’ll also find a lively atmosphere with food stalls and kagura performances. The kagura theatrical performances are captivating they often feature traditional Japanese fables. One year a particularly memorable moment occurred when a demon actor interacted with the audience taking a child hostage with parental permission of course. It was a unique and unforgettable experience that blended tradition with playful interaction. Sumiyoshi Shrine also boasts two A-bombed trees. These resilient trees were transplanted to their present locations in 1995 a symbol of nature’s ability to regenerate even after the devastation.
