Remember Japan’s oldest city? Fukuoka is believed to be Japan’s oldest city. Today we explore the 五家荘園 Stele.

The 五家荘園 Stele stands as a monument. It is a reminder of Fukuoka’s long history. Fukuoka has cultivated rich culture and deep traditions for millennia.

Fukuoka’s story began about 2000 years ago. Villages formed during the Yayoi Period. The Itazuke Ruins reveal a large moated village. Paddy fields developed here marking the birthplace of rice cultivation.

The Yayoi Period also saw metal use in Japan. The Yoshitake-Takagi Ruins are a testament to this era. Excavations unearthed the oldest royal tomb in Japan. This highlights the Fukuoka area’s early prominence and advanced culture.

In the 1st century Nakoku received a golden seal from China’s Late Han Dynasty. The seal’s discovery indicates Nakoku’s active participation in international relations. Nakoku’s legacy remains visible in Fukuoka City.

In the late 3rd century burial mounds began appearing in the region. These tombs were symbols of power. Local ruling families were buried in elaborate tombs.

During the late 7th century the Dazaifu was established. It was a central hub for Kyushu’s governance. It also served as a gateway for diplomacy and trade with Asia. The Korokan was a diplomatic guesthouse on Hakata Bay. Artifacts from China, Korea and Islamic regions were uncovered. This showcases Fukuoka’s broad connections with Asia.

From the late Heian to Kamakura periods trade with China flourished. Hakata became the center of activity. The 13th century brought the Mongol Invasions. The defensive Genko Fortifications remain visible today. Hakata became the headquarters for the Chinzei Tandai. Hakata became the political center of Kyushu.

During the Sengoku Period Hakata was a battleground. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s conquest of Kyushu he implemented a town reorganization. In 1600 Kuroda Nagamasa built Fukuoka Castle. The city grew into a twin city. Fukuoka and Hakata coexisted. Hakata textiles and dolls gained nationwide fame.

In 1889 Fukuoka and Hakata merged. They formed Fukuoka City. The establishment of Kyushu Imperial University cemented Fukuoka’s status. After World War II the city rapidly grew.

Today Fukuoka harmoniously blends the old and the new. The 五家荘園 Stele is a historic site. It stands as a reminder of Fukuoka’s past.
