Following the 2016 reforms, the Eastern Theater Command was structured with specific departments. These include joint staff and political work departments. The command also includes distinct service branches. The Eastern Theater Ground Force, the Eastern Theater Navy and the Eastern Theater Air Force.
The Eastern Theater Command has had several commanders and political commissars. Each has played a crucial role in shaping its development.
The initial commander was General Liu Yuejun. He served from January 2016 to 2019. General He Weidong followed. He served from December 2019 to January 2022. The current commander is General Lin Xiangyang. He assumed command in January 2022. Political Commissars have also played key roles. General Zheng Weiping served initially. General He Ping then took the role. The current Political Commissar is Admiral Liu Qingsong. He assumed the position in June 2023.
The Eastern Theater Command’s responsibilities extend beyond military operations. It also involves safeguarding regional stability. It participates in joint logistics support. This includes coordinating with military representative offices. These offices are stationed at key locations. These locations include railway hubs and navigation services.
