Why settle for ordinary when you can stand where history and athleticism intertwine at Jiangwan Stadium? It is more than just a sports venue. It is a testament to Shanghai’s ambitious spirit.

Jiangwan Stadium stands as a multi-purpose athletics stadium in Shanghai. It is a place where dreams have been realized and history has been made. Once known as Shanghai Stadium, Jiangwan Stadium has a storied past deeply connected to the city’s development.

Built in 1934, Jiangwan Stadium was part of the Greater Shanghai Plan. This plan aimed to create a new civic center. The stadium proudly hosted the National Games of China in 1935. Imagine the excitement and national pride felt during those games.

World War II brought damage to Jiangwan Stadium. The invading Japanese forces caused destruction during the Battle of Shanghai. Despite the damage, the spirit of the stadium and the city endured.

After the war, the Kuomintang government undertook repairs. The stadium was revived for the Seventh National Games in 1948. This event marked the last National Games before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

In 1983, Jiangwan Stadium had the honor of hosting the National Games of China for the last time. This event saw the participation of 8,943 athletes across 26 sports. Can you picture the vibrant display of athleticism and camaraderie?

Jiangwan Stadium stepped onto the international stage when it hosted an Australian Football League exhibition match in 2010. Then in 2017, it hosted its first AFL regular season match. Port Adelaide played the Gold Coast Suns. This marked the first time an AFL premiership match was held outside of Oceania. Port Adelaide triumphed before over 10,000 fans.

The stadium’s playing surface was named Adelaide Arena. AFL games returned in 2018 and 2019, further cementing the stadium’s place in sports history. While the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted plans, Jiangwan Stadium remains a significant venue.

Designed by Dong Dayou, the stadium’s architecture reflects Chinese Art Deco. Dong Dayou also designed many other Shanghai landmarks from the Greater Shanghai Plan era in the 1930s. The stadium is a reminder of the city’s rich architectural heritage.

Getting here is easy. The Jiangwan Stadium is accessible via the Jiangwan Stadium Station on the Shanghai Metro.

Jiangwan Stadium represents Shanghai’s enduring spirit. It is a place where athletic achievements and historical moments converge. Take a moment to appreciate its legacy.
