Lost in thought I found myself standing before Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Minhang Campus. Specifically the Nanyang Bei Yuan International Student Apartment. It’s a rather unassuming building. Yet it holds a wealth of stories.
The South China Sea North Building is more than just student housing. It’s a microcosm of international life. It represents a blend of cultures. Students from around the globe call this place home. Think of the conversations held late into the night. The laughter shared over instant noodles. The quiet moments of studying. The building itself is quite large. It encompasses over 8000 square meters. There are rooms for over 400 faculty and more than 1000 students.
Completed in July 2020 it opened in September of the same year. Imagine the excitement. The anticipation. As students moved into their new home away from home. Each room within the complex offers different amenities. Some have private bathrooms others shared. Yet all boast air conditioning free Wi-Fi and basic furniture. The beds vary in size. Some are 100cm by 200cm others larger at 120cm by 200cm. Students however need to bring their own bedding.
More than just accommodation this complex boasts a range of facilities. There is a laundry a canteen a supermarket. You’ll also find a cafe a gym and even meeting rooms. This helps foster a sense of community among residents. It’s a self-contained world. Everything you need is right here on-site.
Conveniently located near the university’s North Gate the South China Sea North Building is only 1.5 kilometers away. That’s an 8-minute drive. A shuttle bus service operates between the building and the university campus. The shuttle runs multiple times a day. This ensures students have easy access to classes. There’s something magical about these late-night rides back. Shared experiences strengthen the bonds of friendship.
