This megatall skyscraper didn’t appear overnight. Construction began on November 29 2008. The site was once a driving range a rather unexpected predecessor to such a colossal structure. The building finally topped out on August 4 2013. Its exterior was completed in the summer of 2015. The public opening however was delayed until February 2015.

The tower’s 120-degree twist reduces wind loads by 24%. This reduced the amount of steel needed saving an estimated 58 million US dollars.
Inside the Shanghai Tower is a world unto itself. Nine separate zones house offices retail spaces and leisure areas. Each zone has its own atrium featuring gardens cafes and restaurants. It’s a vertical city a testament to efficient urban planning. The tower’s glass facade is double-layered. This unique design allows natural light to penetrate while minimizing heat absorption.
But the Shanghai Tower’s most impressive features are arguably its vertical transportation system. Mitsubishi Electric installed 149 elevators including three high-speed models. At one point these were the fastest elevators in the world. They travel at 18 meters per second a dizzying speed that whisks visitors to the observation deck in a matter of seconds. The observation deck itself is another highlight located on the 121st floor at a height of 562 meters. It was once the highest observation deck in the world offering breathtaking views of the city.
The J Hotel Shanghai Tower is situated between floors 84 and 110. In 2021 it opened as the world’s highest luxury hotel. It’s a fitting addition to this remarkable building.
