“Foreign language skills? Essential!” declared Mrs. Chen to her son, pointing towards the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) living quarters. The SISU living quarters, or 上外生活区, buzzed with activity. Students hurried along pathways, books clutched in their hands. Laughter in a multitude of languages filled the air. This vibrant hub, part of the Hongkou campus, isn’t just a place for students to sleep. It represents the university’s commitment to fostering global citizens. SISU has two campuses: Hongkou and Songjiang. The Hongkou campus, where we stand near the student living area, is nestled in the heart of Shanghai. It is close to Lu Xun Park and the Duolun Road modern art scene. This area, once part of St. John’s University, now houses primarily graduate students, international students, and those participating in training programs. The university’s emphasis on language acquisition resonates within these walls. Think of the countless conversations, debates, and late-night study sessions that have unfolded here, fueled by copious amounts of coffee and the burning desire to connect with the world. In December 2024, SISU hosted the “Foreign Language Society Cup” Shanghai Students English Storytelling Competition. Students from all educational levels, from primary school to university, shared stories about Shanghai in English. This event, held at the Hongkou campus, not far from the student living quarters, highlighted the university’s commitment to cultivating future storytellers, communicators, and cultural ambassadors. Imagine the nervous excitement as students presented their tales, their voices carrying the echoes of Shanghai’s vibrant past and present. The SISU living quarters offer more than just accommodation. They offer a unique window into the lives of future global citizens. As students from all corners of the world prepare to share their unique perspectives, the energy within these walls continues to inspire.
