Picture this a serene temple nestled amidst the bustling city of Hiroshima. This is Sankō-in Temple a place steeped in history and brimming with untold stories.

Built in 1934 by the heiress Naraei Nishino Sankō-in was a tribute to Monk Sankō a trusted advisor to Emperor Godaigo. Nishino envisioned it as a convent for women a haven of peace and spiritual growth. The temple became a Rinzai Zen temple under Mt Taigen dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha.

Monk Eiju Mamiya head of Hoko-ji Temple helped realize Nishino’s dream. Soei Yoneda the first abbess arrived from Donge-in Temple in Kyoto. Donge-in a prestigious monzeki convent known as the Bamboo Palace brought with her a culinary tradition over 600 years old. The shōjin cooking style of the Bamboo Palace a legacy passed down through generations of abbesses found a new home at Sankō-in.

Abbess Soei’s influence extended beyond the kitchen. Sankō-in became a terakoya school offering classes in Buddhist calligraphy drawing music therapy French cooking and nature walks. A unique blend of traditional and modern learning.

The temple’s founder Naraei Nishino was the daughter of Sasuke Miki a pioneer of Western music in Japan. Miki Instruments his family business introduced Yamaha organs and Suzuki violins. He even published the Railroad Song a national hit. His legacy subtly intertwined with Sankō-in’s history.

Today Sankō-in stands as a testament to female empowerment and cultural preservation. It’s a place where history spirituality and education intertwine a tranquil oasis in the heart of Hiroshima. Its story a beautiful tapestry woven from faith legacy and the enduring spirit of those who built it.
