Israeli missiles rained down upon the village, striking a six-story building. The attack, the deadliest single Israeli strike in the Lebanon conflict, claimed the lives of 73 people and injured at least 29 others. The IDF claimed the building housed a Hezbollah command center and that most of the casualties were “terror operatives.” However, a BBC investigation in January 2025 challenged this narrative. They were unable to confirm the identities of 68 of the victims, finding links to Hezbollah for only six, none of whom held senior positions. The majority of those lost in Ain ad-Delb, including 23 children, were civilians. Ain ad-Delb, a village primarily Maronite Catholic and Greek Catholic, stands as a testament to the complexities of the conflict in Lebanon. Before the 2024 tragedy, Ain ad-Delb was known for its peaceful atmosphere and its largely Christian population. In 1875, the village was noted for its Maronite inhabitants. Demographic data from 2014 further confirms the Christian dominance in the area, with 98.49% of registered voters identifying as Christian. Ain ad-Delb’s story is one of contrasts: a place of serenity disrupted by violence, a community united in faith confronting the devastation of loss.
