“Remember those executed in 1916” a whisper from the past seems to say. We stand before Martyrs’ Square in Beirut a place etched with history. This square wasn’t always called Martyrs’ Square. It began as Sahat al-Burj Tower Square. A Russian cannon arrived in 1773 renaming it Place du Canon. More cannons from the French fleet replaced it in 1860 changing the name again to Place des Canons.

The Ottoman Empire ruled Lebanon then. In 1915 terrible famine struck. The Ottomans seized food causing widespread death. A revolt followed. Many Lebanese intellectuals and nationalists fought for independence. Their struggle ended tragically. On May 6 1916 they were executed here in Place des Canons.

Their sacrifice was not forgotten. In 1931 the square was renamed Martyrs’ Square to honor them. A monument was built a powerful symbol of their defiance. The first monument Les Pleureuses The Weeping Women was unpopular. It was replaced in 1960 by the current Martyrs’ Monument.

During Lebanon’s Civil War 1975-1990 Martyrs’ Square became a dividing line. It symbolized the city’s deep divisions. Today however it is a vibrant space a place of remembrance and renewal. It is the heart of Beirut. It witnesses the resilience of the Lebanese people. The square tells a story of struggle sacrifice and enduring hope. It is a place to reflect on the past and celebrate the future. Walk around the square. Let the past whisper its stories. Let the spirit of the martyrs inspire you.
