Two hundred thousand artifacts. That’s a lot of history isn’t it? Welcome to the Chengdu Museum.

This isn’t just any museum. It’s the largest comprehensive city museum in Southwest China a true treasure trove. It began its life humbly in 1958. The Chengdu Municipal Government established the Chengdu Topographical Museum Preparatory Committee. They started at Daci Temple. Can you imagine curating a museum within a temple? The contrast alone must have been fascinating.

Years went by. Finally in 1984 the Chengdu Museum officially opened. Its home was still the Daci Temple a truly unique beginning for such a significant institution. But this wasn’t the end of the story. The museum outgrew its home. Architects Sutherland Hussey Harris designed a stunning new building. It opened in 2016. This 65000 square meter marvel became the Chengdu Museum New Hall. The old building may have been quaint but the new structure truly showcases the treasures within.

The collections are mind-boggling. From Neolithic artifacts to those from the Republic of China period you can trace thousands of years of history. They boast shadow puppets wood carvings and priceless historical artifacts. Over 300000 pieces chronicle the rich tapestry of Sichuan’s past. There are even exhibitions dedicated to the art of shadow puppetry and the work of Kenneth E Behring. It’s a testament to the ongoing effort to preserve Chengdu’s heritage.

Did you know the museum has garnered numerous national awards? They’ve earned recognition for innovation excellence and their contributions to the community. It’s not just about preserving the past it’s about actively engaging with the present and shaping the future. Chengdu Museum isn’t merely a repository of artifacts. It’s a vibrant cultural hub a center for learning and a testament to the enduring spirit of Chengdu. It has attracted nearly 16 million visitors since its new hall opened. That’s a lot of people appreciating the legacy of this city.
