“Did you hear about the tragic incident at the mosque last year?” the old woman whispered. We stood before the Imam Ali Mosque, its minaret a beacon against the sky. This Masjid, the Imam Ali Mosque, has witnessed a lot in its time, but nothing quite as shocking as the events of last Ashura. A hush fell over our group as I recounted the horrific tale. It was supposed to be a night of solemn commemoration, a time when Shia Muslims remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. But the peace was shattered when gunfire ripped through the air. Three gunmen stormed the courtyard, spraying bullets into the terrified crowd. People scrambled for cover, desperate prayers mixing with the sound of screams and echoing shots. In the end, nine innocent souls lost their lives. Four of them were Pakistani nationals, simply there to observe this holy day. The attack on the Imam Ali Mosque was a stark reminder that even in a peaceful nation like Oman, violence can erupt. But it also highlighted the resilience of the community. Despite the tragedy, the mosque still stands, a testament to faith and the enduring human spirit
