“A miniature Tower of Babel.” That is how architect Zvi Hecker described the Spiral House.
Welcome to the Spiral House, an apartment complex in Ramat Gan. It is a unique and iconic building. The Spiral House stands as a testament to architectural innovation.
Construction of the Spiral House took place from 1984 to 1990. Zvi Hecker designed it with Gil Bernstein, Shmuel Groberman, and Rina Hering. Ezra Mualem is the owner. Hecker also lived opposite the Spiral House in the Dubiner house. He maintained explicit control. He changed the design several times during construction.
The Spiral House deploys the principle of terracing. It is typical of Arab villages. There, the roof is part of the living space.
Shmuel Grobstein participated in the design. He said the Spiral House looks like a storm passed through Ramat Gan. The storm picked up wrecks from roofs and yards. It created the spiral in one swoop.
The building is in concrete. Its facade features plaster, pink glass, stone fragments and corrugated tin.
The Spiral House has eight apartments. They are located on six levels. There are also two roof apartments.
In 1999, Hecker won the Rechter Prize for architecture. He won it for the Spiral House.
Even Hecker’s daughter, Ella Zimmerman, lives in the Spiral House. She lives there with her family.
Living in the Spiral House is special. One resident, Lital, says the building makes you feel like you are abroad. The unique architecture inspires its residents.
Interestingly apartments in the Spiral House do not often come up for sale. The apartments range between five and seven million shekels.
The apartments have unique designs. They also have high ceilings.
The location of the Spiral House is special too. The building overlooks Gan City.
Imagine living in a structure that defies convention. The Spiral House is a home. It is a work of art. The building fosters a sense of community. Its residents appreciate its special character.
