“Your name is unknown your deed is immortal.” These powerful words mark a place of deep respect. It is the \u0424\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435 War memorial.
Today we stand before a place of remembrance. The \u0424\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435 War memorial honors Soviet soldiers. They died during World War II. In Russia it is known as the Great Patriotic War. The memorial stands as a symbol. It recognizes their sacrifice and bravery.
The \u0424\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435 War memorial’s history is poignant. Millions of Soviet soldiers went missing after the war. They were presumed dead. The monument was unveiled on May 8 1967. It provided a focal point for grieving families.
In 1997 a Guard of Honour was restored here. It is from the Kremlin Regiment. Previously they guarded Lenin’s Mausoleum. A Changing of the Guard ceremony happens every hour. This adds solemnity to the memorial.
The memorial has been renewed several times. For the 30th anniversary of Victory Day celebrations it was fully restored. A laurel branch and helmet by Nikolai Tomsky were added.
In 2009 the monument gained status. It became a Nationwide Memorial of Military Glory. Reconstruction aimed to preserve the original appearance. A stele with the names of cities of military glory was planned.
The flame returned to the Alexander Garden in 2010. Dmitry Medvedev attended the event. The reconstructed memorial complex opened on Victory Day. The presidents of Russia Belarus and Ukraine attended.

Remains of soldiers killed in the Battle of Moscow in 1941 are buried here. They were moved from a mass grave. The initial burial was at the 40th km of the Leningrad highway.

To the left of the \u0424\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435 War memorial is a granite wall. It states “1941 To Those Who Have Fallen For The Motherland 1945”. To the right are porphyry blocks. They contain soil from hero cities. These include Leningrad Kiev and Minsk. Further right is an obelisk. It lists the names of 40 “Cities of Military Glory”.
