Lost in thought she stands defiant. This is the statue of Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya. It commemorates a young woman who became a symbol of resistance during World War II.

Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya was a Soviet partisan. She was executed by the Nazis in November 1941. Zoya’s story became famous after an article appeared in Pravda. The article described her courage and defiance.

The monument to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya stands in the Mikhalkovo estate. It is near the Golovinskiye Ponds. The statue depicts Zoya full-body. She wears a military tunic and skirt. Her gaze looks confidently into the distance.

Zoya was the first woman to receive the title Hero of the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War. She devoted her life to serving the Motherland. Her story is one of courage and sacrifice.

In October 1941 Zoya volunteered for a partisan unit. She was a high school student in Moscow. Zoya was assigned to unit 9903. This unit was part of the Staff of the Western Front.

Zoya and other partisans crossed the front line. They entered German-occupied territory. Their mission was to mine roads and cut communication lines.

On November 27 1941 Zoya received a new assignment. She was ordered to burn the village of Petrishchevo. A German cavalry regiment was stationed there. Zoya and two fellow partisans set fire to three houses.

The partisans believed Germans used these houses. One as a communications center and others for accommodation. After the first arson attempt Zoya was separated from her comrades. She decided to return to Petrishchevo and continue her mission.

German military authorities had organized local residents. They formed a militia to prevent further arson. Zoya was arrested. She was tortured for information. She refused to betray her comrades.

The following morning Zoya was marched to the village center. She wore a sign around her neck. It read Houseburner. Zoya was hanged.

Before her execution Zoya spoke to the villagers. She urged them to fight the Germans. She declared it happiness to die for one’s people. To the Germans she said there were 200000000 of them who could not all be hanged. She insisted they would be avenged.

The Germans left her body hanging for weeks. It was desecrated.

Zoya’s story inspired the Soviet people. She became a symbol of resistance. Her image was used in anti-German propaganda. Many streets and organizations were named after her.

The statue of Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya reminds us of her bravery. It stands as a testament to the sacrifices made during the war. It is a reminder of the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya is buried at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. Another statue of Zoya is at Partizanskaya Moscow Metro station.
