“A music school?” you might ask. It is not just any school. The Music School of Rhodes is special.
Welcome to the Music School of Rhodes. It is a place where young musicians learn and grow. This school specializes in music education. It also teaches other important subjects.
The Music School of Rhodes opened in September 1993. It started with only 28 students and 10 teachers. By 2013 the school had grown. It then had 231 pupils and 68 teachers. Now, the school has 335 pupils and 78 teachers.
The school has 15 sections. Nine are for the first three years of high school. Six are for the last three years. The Music School of Rhodes teaches more than just music. Students also learn maths and languages. The school is open Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM.
The idea for the Music School of Rhodes came from the Music School’s Arts Committee. Many people were skeptical at first. They doubted a school focused on one subject.
In its first year, the Music School of Rhodes faced challenges. Housing students was a problem. The school was first located in Therme. It then moved to the 6th Gymnasium of Rhodes.
During the second year, the school building was divided. There were three sections for teaching. Space was still limited. Teachers often taught in the kitchen or yard. More teachers joined the Music School of Rhodes that year.
By the third year, the school found a temporary solution. It moved to “Gold Court” in Afantou. The school was more stable. It won awards at the PanHellenic music competition. They won for their Byzantine Choir and in piano and European Choir.
The Music School of Rhodes eventually gained EU funds. It built a new building in Asgourou. This is where it is located today. The school participated in another competition. It took four first places.
The Music School of Rhodes hosts many events. These include operas and concerts. They also host culturally themed events. One event was “Dancing and Singing in Asia Minor”. Another was the “Music Stand” event. It explored the stories of Alexandros Papadiamantis. The Music School of Rhodes also holds a music festival each year. Students can participate in this festival.
The school hosts a festival showcasing contemporary music. This event allows young musicians to show their talents. Students must pass an audition to perform. The school was chosen for its location. It combines historical monuments and natural beauty.
The festival is divided into three phases. First, students apply to perform. Second, bands audition before The Arts Committee. Third, selected groups are given performance slots.
For the last three years, the Music School of Rhodes organizes a music festival. It is called “Rhodes: Crossroads of Cultures and Partnerships of Music Schools”. Many music schools participate.
The school’s computer department created a 3D game in 2012. It is called Rollit! Students worked together to create the game. Another game is called “The Journey of the Mouse”. It teaches the geography of Europe. The Music School of Rhodes also has a school radio. They also offer sports and concerts.
The Music School of Rhodes is more than just a school. It is a center for music and culture. It is a place where students can express their talents. It enriches the cultural life of Rhodes.
