Queen Emma’s gaze swept across the grounds of ‘Iolani School in 1870. She saw more than just buildings. She saw the embodiment of a dream, a haven for learning she and Kamehameha IV had envisioned. ‘Iolani School, named in honor of her late husband, whose birth name included ‘Iolani, meaning “heavenly hawk,” was taking flight. Founded in 1863 as St. Alban’s College by Bishop Staley and Father Mason, ‘Iolani School was initially patronized by Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. It was a testament to their shared belief in the power of education, a beacon of hope for Hawai‘i’s future. Over the years, ‘Iolani School has evolved, mirroring the changes in Hawai‘i itself. From its early days in Nu‘uanu Valley, where it served as a haven for students of Hawaiian descent, to its current location on the Ala Wai, the school’s commitment to academic excellence has remained unwavering. In 1979, ‘Iolani School opened its doors to girls, marking a significant shift in its history. The school further expanded its offerings by reinstating its boarding program in 2018. The newly constructed residence hall stands as a symbol of ‘Iolani’s dedication to providing a holistic educational experience. Today, ‘Iolani School stands as one of the largest independent schools in the United States, a vibrant community of over 2,000 students from diverse backgrounds. The campus is a hive of activity. Students bustling between classes in the Castle Building, exploring their creativity in the Sullivan Center for Innovation and Learning, or honing their skills on the athletic fields. From the state-of-the-art Kaneshiro Science and Innovation Center to the historic St. Alban’s Chapel, ‘Iolani School offers a rich tapestry of learning experiences. The school’s motto, “One Team,” instilled by Father Kenneth A. Bray, permeates every aspect of ‘Iolani life, promoting humility, service, and teamwork, not only in athletics, but in all endeavors. ‘Iolani School’s legacy extends far beyond its walls. Its alumni have made their mark in diverse fields, from Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki to Toronto Raptors General Manager Bobby Webster, showcasing the school’s impact on the world.
