A hidden paradise at the end of the world. That’s Callelongue. Callelongue isn’t just a street it’s a journey. A journey to the edge of Marseille itself. This small rocky inlet a calanque in Provençal once thrived as a haven for fishermen and sailors. Their sturdy little boats bobbed in the sheltered waters. Cabanons simple cabins clung to the hillsides.

But Callelongue’s story changed in 1849. A chemical factory the Weiss factory rose on the shores. This industrial giant operated until 1884 leaving its mark on the landscape. Some of those old factory buildings remain now repurposed for homes and businesses. They stand as silent witnesses to Callelongue’s transformation.

Above Callelongue dramatic cliffs rise. Les Lames and Le pas de la Demi-Lune offer breathtaking views. The challenging climb to Le rocher des Goudes a 258-meter peak was first conquered by climbers in 1890. Further on the ridge of La Cordée leads to the summit of Saint-Michel at 321 meters.

Saint-Michel’s rocky heights hide a secret. Caves within the rock bear traces of prehistoric inhabitants. The baume Sourne a cave in Provençal once sheltered hermits. They established a troglodyte chapel in the Middle Ages. Though the chapel is gone the natural freshwater spring remains. A true blessing in this otherwise arid landscape.

Callelongue’s charm extends beyond its history. Its unique beauty has attracted filmmakers. Famous movies including Marcel Pagnol’s César starring Raimu and Pierre Fresnay were filmed here. Callelongue has also served as a backdrop for many others. Its cinematic past adds another layer to its captivating allure.

The Calanques National Park embraces Callelongue. The restanques terraced hillsides hold an unexpected surprise an exotic garden. This garden showcases unique plants but some are invasive. They pose a threat to native species. Park officials closely monitor their spread.

Reaching Callelongue is an adventure in itself. You can take the RTM bus number 19 then number 20. The coastal road offers scenic views but can be congested especially during peak season. Public transport or cycling is recommended to avoid the traffic.

So stand here. At the edge of Marseille. Gaze upon Callelongue. Breathe in its history. Feel its rugged beauty. Let the stories of fishermen filmmakers and hermits weave themselves into your own experience. Callelongue a small place with a big story to tell. A story that continues to unfold with every sunrise.
