Picture this West Coates a residential district in the heart of Edinburgh. It sits on the A8 near Haymarket station and Roseburn. The Water of Leith flows along its northern edge. West Coates boasts a fascinating history. It was once home to Donaldson’s College a school for the deaf. The name itself originates from Coates Hall on Rosebery Crescent.

The area’s urban design is centered around Roseburn Free Church. Robert Reid Raeburn designed this church in 1867. However the church is overshadowed by Donaldson’s School. North and south of the main road the character of West Coates changes dramatically. North you’ll find grand villas on spacious avenues. South lie more modest homes including the single-story cottages of Devon Place. James McKelvie a coal merchant built these cottages in 1864. They were originally linked to the rail marshalling yards.

Along the main road admire the Jacobean style villas numbered 1 to 6. Alexander Black designed these beautiful buildings. Number 7 was the work of John Chesser. Further into the area 1 Wester Coates Gardens stands as a testament to Thomas Duncan Rhind’s architectural talent.

West Coates has a rich history beyond its architecture. Trix Kipling Rudyard Kipling’s sister lived here. Other notable residents included George F Merson Andrew Edward Scougal and Professor James Walker. Their lives contributed to the vibrant tapestry of West Coates.
