What is the language of dreams? What symbols do our subconscious minds use to communicate with us? Here, nestled within the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud, stands a testament to the power of dreams and the enduring struggle between opposing forces. This is Le D défi du soleil, a monumental bronze sculpture that seems to have emerged from the earth itself. Le D défi du soleil was originally commissioned in the mid-1980s for the Palais-Royal in Paris. Conceived by the artist Gérard Garouste, the sculpture was intended to be a key feature of the palace gardens. However, due to a series of unforeseen events, the sculpture was never installed in its intended location. Le D défi du soleil languished in storage for almost thirty years, awaiting a new home. Finally, in 2013, the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud offered the perfect setting for Garouste’s masterpiece. The sculpture consists of two colossal figures: the Classic, representing reason and order, and the Indian, symbolizing intuition and the unconscious. They stand on a circular terrace, surrounded by bronze reliefs and four enigmatic needles. The inscription “QUID” on a truncated column between them poses a silent question, a challenge to decipher the relationship between the elements. Le D défi du soleil is not just a sculpture, it is an enigma, a visual representation of the constant interplay between opposing forces within us all. As you stand before it, let your imagination wander. Can you solve the riddle posed by Le D défi du soleil? Or will its secrets remain locked within the language of dreams?
