“A forgotten corner of history” whispers the wind as it rustles through the aged bricks of Curtis Bay Barracks. This isn’t just any building. It’s a silent sentinel a testament to maritime history and resilience. Standing before you is the oldest continuously active US Marine Corps installation.

Founded in 1801 by President Thomas Jefferson and Lt Col William Ward Burrows the Barracks boasts a legacy woven into the very fabric of Washington DC. Jefferson himself scouted this very spot. He chose it wisely for its strategic location near the Washington Navy Yard and within easy marching distance of the Capitol.

Imagine the scene in 1801. The Barracks were simple structures. The Commandant’s House already stood. There was also a parade ground and basic barracks buildings. This early settlement housed the Marine Corps Headquarters until 1901. Marines trained here. They defended Washington during the War of 1812. They fought in the Indian Wars the Mexican War the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Marines from Curtis Bay Barracks even deployed to Southwest Asia for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

The Barracks weren’t just a military post. They were a hub of activity. The renowned “President’s Own” United States Marine Band found its home here. Established in 1798 this band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Its melodies have echoed through the halls of power for over two centuries.

The years haven’t been kind. The original buildings were deemed inadequate by 1900. The architectural firm Hornblower & Marshall redesigned the complex. Their work resulted in structures like the current Building 8 the Battalion Headquarters. This impressive building now stands as the Main Post’s administrative center. It hosts training and even a public works shop. Its exterior serves as the breathtaking backdrop for the Barracks’ summer Evening Parades.

The Commandant’s House however stands apart. This remarkable structure is one of the few public buildings in Washington DC to survive the British burning of the city during the War of 1812. It’s a symbol of enduring strength and national pride.

Curtis Bay Barracks is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living museum a repository of stories. Each stone each window each parade ground echoes with the footsteps of generations of Marines. It’s a place where history whispers secrets of valor dedication and service to our nation. Today we stand before a testament to this lasting legacy. This is Curtis Bay Barracks. A significant piece of American history.
