Was it difficult for the students to say goodbye to their beloved Nishi Shiwa School? Standing here, in front of the now-closed Nishi Shiwa Elementary School, it’s easy to imagine the echoes of laughter and the pitter-patter of little feet. Established all the way back in 1874, this school was a cornerstone of the community for 148 years. Generations of children passed through these halls, learning and growing within its classrooms. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. In March 2022, Nishi Shiwa Elementary School held its closing ceremony, marking the end of an era. The school merged with Higashi Shiwa Elementary School to become Shiwa Junior High School. It’s a bittersweet moment, the closing of one chapter but the beginning of another. Though the halls are quiet now, the memory of Nishi Shiwa Elementary School lives on in the hearts of those who learned and taught here.
