“A luxurious riding centre.” That’s how Mattssons riding hall was once described. Here at Mattssons riding hall, we find ourselves at a place steeped in equestrian history.

Mattssons riding hall is more than just a building. It is a testament to a passion for horses that spans generations. Axel Mattsson, born in 1887, inherited his father’s love for horses. He opened his own riding school in 1909. It began modestly with a small wooden stable. Only two horses and a bicycle accompanied him, as he cycled around teaching students.

By 1917, Axel Mattsson erected a red wooden riding hall. It measured 13 x 21.5 meters. This laid the foundation for a year-round riding school. The school expanded in the 1930s. It housed 80 horses. Stabling was also available in nearby facilities.

In 1936, the existing Mattssons riding hall was built. Architect Arne Jacobsen designed it. It spanned 890 square meters. At that time, it was the largest riding hall in the Nordic region. Jacobsen also designed Bellavista housing estate. Bellavista is the clearest example of Bauhaus architecture in Denmark.

After Axel Mattsson’s death in 1937, his wife Lilly Mattsson took over. In 1940, she formed the company “Axel Mattssons Rideskole og Hestepension A/S”. Lilly was the main shareholder. Managing the establishment during and after the war was difficult. However, enough horses were stabled to keep it going.

The first riding club, MRK, was founded here in 1953. The current club, MAK, was established in 1979. Mattssons riding hall has undergone renovations. In 1981, the skylight prisms were removed. A total renovation occurred in 1998. In 2023, a new riding arena was created with new fencing and drainage.

Axel Mattsson’s connection to horses began early. At 16, he became a stable boy for Prince Valdemar and Princess Marie. This led to a lifelong friendship. Later, competition rider Prince Viggo received advice from Axel. Before opening his riding school, Axel worked at Cirkus Orlando in Stockholm. He debuted as an artistic rider. He also toured Denmark with Cirkus Bech-Olsen.

Mattssons Rideklub welcomes everyone who loves horses. Here, experienced riders share space with beginners. The club offers private and group lessons in dressage and jumping. Forest rides at various levels are also available.

As you stand here, imagine the echoes of hooves. Picture the riders honing their skills. Feel the passion for horses that has defined Mattssons riding hall for over a century. A legacy of equestrian excellence continues within these walls.
