From humble beginnings in a rented shop. Toa Payoh Methodist Church stands tall today. Its story is one of faith community and perseverance. In 1968 a Methodist mission started in Toa Payoh. It wasn’t a grand building but a simple shop. It served as a kindergarten by day and a free clinic by night. The first service was held there in 1969. This humble beginning truly reflects the church’s dedication to serving the community. The congregation later moved to another shop in Lorong 7.
The dream of a permanent church building was fueled by Reverend Nga Tieng Chieng. The founding pastor of Faith Methodist Church led the fundraising. He even took out a personal loan to make it happen. The new church costing around S$1 million opened on 1 September 1973. It had space for 1200 people. Imagine the joy and relief. The congregation finally had a proper place to worship.
The building wasn’t just a church. It was also home to the 10th Singapore Company of the Boys’ Brigade. Bishop Dr Yap Kim Hao officiated the groundbreaking on 25 December 1971. The foundation stone was laid on 18 November 1972. The completed building was ready in August 1973. A significant milestone for Toa Payoh Methodist Church. This shows the combined effort and vision that brought this place of worship to life.
Toa Payoh Methodist Church didn’t just stop there. It underwent redevelopment in 2010. The compound now also houses Toa Payoh Chinese Methodist Church. The church continues to grow and adapt. It remains a vital part of the Toa Payoh community. It shows a commitment to serving others and spreading its message of faith. It truly embodies its mission to love and care for people. From humble shop to thriving church. Toa Payoh Methodist Church’s story is an inspiration to us all.
