“A pottery room” someone whispered. That’s the latest news at Studentergården. Right here before us stands Studentergården a Copenhagen institution. More than just a dormitory it’s a vibrant community steeped in nearly a century of history. King Christian X himself laid the foundation stone in 1922. The building opened the following year a testament to Danish craftsmanship and student life.

Studentergården isn’t your average dorm. It boasts 130 single rooms. Each kitchen has its unique name like ‘Barbarian’ or ‘Abortion’. Residents engage in ‘yard feuds’ playful rivalries passed down through generations. For a monthly rent of around 2300 DKK you get a room. Shared kitchens showers and toilets are common. But there’s much more.

Studentergården offers a surprisingly self-sufficient existence. Its own tavern ‘Porteren’ serves beer every Thursday. A food club meets five times a week. There’s even a car guild a running club and a workshop. Pernille Aavild an ‘Older’ or chairperson of the Gårdstyret explains residents can essentially live their entire student lives within its walls. During quiet periods like May June December and January residents focus on studies. But weekends often erupt into parties.

Three big annual parties mark the calendar Fastelavn the chestnut party and the New Year’s party. Open house parties and ‘Tour de Chambre’ dinners for newcomers abound. The Gårdstyret a resident democracy governs the dorm. They decide everything from adding a ceramics room to installing a new beer dispenser. A ‘yard tax’ funds social events. Applications are now anonymous ensuring diversity among residents.

In 1944 Studentergården suffered damage during the Schalburgtage. A plaque commemorates those who fell. Women were only permitted to live here from 1971 onwards. Computer networks arrived in 1997. The building even has its own brewery. The annual ‘yard day’ celebrates democracy. Big decisions are made collectively. The communal spirit is tangible.

Studentergården is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to student camaraderie tradition and Copenhagen’s rich culture. It’s a place where friendships forged within its walls last a lifetime. It’s a place where history meets modernity. It’s a place where you never quite know what to expect. But you always know it’s going to be an adventure. Enjoy your time exploring this unique corner of Copenhagen.
