“Imagine this place buzzing with laughter. It’s a Sunday morning in Taman Kencana.” It is easy to picture, right? Taman Kencana is a small park in Bogor. It offers a green escape from the city’s hustle. Its history stretches back to the Dutch colonial era. It is a relic from a bygone time.

Taman Kencana has seen Bogor grow and change. For decades it has been a silent witness. Around Taman Kencana, old buildings stand as reminders of the past. These buildings are over 50 years old. They showcase a blend of architectural styles. The styles mix colonial Indische designs with tropical house elements. The steeply pitched roofs are a signature feature.

One expert says that Taman Kencana holds a unique collection of Indische buildings. Four buildings have significant historical value. These include the National Land Agency Bogor building. There is also the Radio Republik Indonesia Bogor building. Another is the Center for Biofarmaca Studies. It is part of the Bogor Agricultural University. Finally, there is the Indonesian Plantation Biotechnology Research Institute.

Many original buildings were homes for the Dutch community during colonial times. Today, some houses serve as offices. They house NGOs focused on preserving nature. They also study forestry, plantations, agriculture and the environment.

The Dutch colonial government built the PSB building in 1928. It was first a veterinary school. The name was Nederlands Indische Veartsen School. The Japanese occupation in 1942 changed its name. It became Bogor Jyui Gakko. After Indonesia’s independence in 1945, it transformed again. It was renamed the Veterinary School. A year later it became the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Taman Kencana offers a cool and shady atmosphere. Many trees cover the area. This makes it a popular spot for recreation. People gather here. Various communities meet here too. These include pet lovers. Street food vendors and food outlets add to the park’s appeal.

On Sundays, Taman Kencana is bustling. It is a popular destination for joggers. They come after exercising around the Bogor Botanical Gardens or Sempur Field. Taman Kencana was established between 1926 and 1930. It was originally intended for European residents. It was first named Von Imhoff Plein. This name honored the founder of the Bogor Palace. After Indonesia gained independence, it was renamed Taman Kencana.

Taman Kencana underwent revitalization in 2015. It was improved and made better. The park features shady trees and plants. The center of Taman Kencana remains open without trees. Still it stays cool and inviting. Visitors can relax on park benches. The park hosts events and activities like jogging. There is no entrance fee. You can enjoy Taman Kencana for free. You only need to pay for parking.

A gold statue stands in one corner of the park. It represents the Youth Pledge. It was erected in 2017. The statue includes quotes from Bimbim Slank and Najwa Shihab. Taman Kencana has evolved over the years. Today it is a place for community and recreation. It offers a glimpse into Bogor’s rich history. It is a vibrant public space for everyone.
