“A church without a bell tower? How unusual!”, you might think. And you’d be right. This, my friends, is Sankt Kunigund, a church with a story as unique as its architecture. Sankt Kunigund stands before us, a testament to faith and resilience. Built in the 1950s for the burgeoning Gartenstadt district, Sankt Kunigund was meant to have a grand bell tower. However, the difficult ground conditions forced the builders to make a tough choice. The tower, deemed too expensive, was scrapped. This earned the church a playful nickname: “The Barn”, thanks to its high-pitched roof. But don’t let the lack of a tower or a nickname fool you. Inside, Sankt Kunigund houses an unexpected treasure: a replica of Matthias Grünewald’s Isenheimer Altarpiece. This labor of love, painstakingly created by a local priest, stands as a testament to the devotion that built this church. It’s a reminder that true beauty lies not in outward appearances, but in the spirit within. So, the next time you hear someone call Sankt Kunigund “The Barn”, remember its story. It’s a story of community, faith, and resourcefulness, echoing the spirit of Bamberg itself.
