Gazing at St. Elisabeth Church, have you ever wondered about its unusual history? This isn’t just a beautiful church. It’s a building that has played many roles throughout Bamberg’s history. St. Elisabeth Church was consecrated in 1354. It was initially built to serve the “Hospice of the Holy Spirit” in the Sand District. Imagine the bustle of activity as the church provided spiritual solace to the hospice residents. The choir you see today dates back to 1400, a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of that era. The nave, a later addition, was erected in 1493, expanding the church’s capacity to serve the growing community. St. Elisabeth Church has witnessed periods of upheaval and transformation. During the secularization era, the church’s purpose shifted dramatically. It was repurposed as a prison and workhouse. Think of the stories these walls could tell, the echoes of lives both cared for and confined. St. Elisabeth was eventually reconsecrated in 1883, reclaiming its role as a place of worship. Today, the church holds a special appeal for art enthusiasts. Eight vibrant stained-glass windows, designed by the contemporary German artist Markus Lüpertz, illuminate the space. These windows depict the legend of St. Elisabeth and the seven works of mercy, adding a modern touch to this historic building. Lüpertz’s influence extends beyond the windows. His statue “Apoll” stands proudly in front of the church, greeting visitors as they arrive. For those seeking a contemplative experience, an ancient Stations of the Cross begins at St. Elisabeth. This pathway, dating back to 1503, winds up St. Michael’s hill to St. Getreu, guiding pilgrims along the Via Dolorosa.
