Did you know that this remarkable vessel before you, the Massey Shaw, is more than just a fireboat? It is a symbol of courage and resilience. The Massey Shaw stands as a testament to London’s wartime spirit.

She’s named after Captain Sir Eyre Massey Shaw. He was the first Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Built in 1935, the Massey Shaw served London bravely. She cost around 18000 pounds.

Now, picture this. It is May 1940. The call comes for the Massey Shaw to join the Dunkirk evacuation. A volunteer crew of firemen prepares her for the perilous journey. They buy a compass from a local shop. They paint the brasswork grey for wartime camouflage.

Imagine the scene. The Massey Shaw, navigated by a young Royal Navy Sub Lieutenant, sets off. He skillfully guides her through minefields and treacherous sandbanks. Smoke rises from Dunkirk in the distance. The compass may be faulty, but their determination is unwavering.

Over three trips, the Massey Shaw ferries over 600 soldiers from the beaches to larger ships. She even rescues 40 survivors from a French ship that struck a mine. This heroic action earned her a Mention in Dispatches. The coxswain Sub Officer A.J. May received the Navy’s Distinguished Service Medal.

Back in London, the Massey Shaw continued her duties. She became the first fire appliance fitted with wireless. During the Blitz, she pumped water from the Thames. She fought fires along the waterfront. The Massey Shaw played a vital role. Mains were often destroyed by bombing.

Here’s a little-known fact. In 1947, a secret meeting took place onboard. Herbert Morrison MP and Aneurin Bevin MP met to discuss the formation of the National Health Service. The Massey Shaw was present at a pivotal moment in British history.

The Massey Shaw served until 1971. She was then abandoned. Philip Wray and others formed a society to save her. They leased her and began a long-term preservation effort.

Saved from dereliction, enthusiasts restored her with a Heritage Lottery Grant. The Massey Shaw returned to London by road in 2013. Final restoration stages were completed.

Today, the Massey Shaw is moored in London’s West India Docks. The Massey Shaw is a museum ship. She is also an educational resource. She teaches young people about the sacrifices of past generations.

Remember the Massey Shaw. She embodies the spirit of London. She is a reminder of bravery in the face of adversity. Her story continues to inspire all.
