What secrets does a shield hold? San Pablo Chimalpa, nestled in the mountains of Mexico City, whispers tales of warriors and revolutionaries, hidden caves and ancient artifacts. San Pablo Chimalpa is one of the five original settlements of Cuajimalpa. Its name, derived from the Nahuatl word “chimalli,” meaning “on the shield,” hints at its rich history. Oral tradition tells of a warrior named Chimalli, who founded the town in 1532 during a land redistribution by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza. The town’s patron saint, Saint Paul (Pablo), adds another layer to its identity. He was specifically assigned to Chimalpa, while San Pedro watches over the entirety of Cuajimalpa.

San Pablo Chimalpa sits along the Cuajimalpa-Huixquilucan highway, about four kilometers from San Pedro Cuajimalpa. The church and atrium form the heart of this small, rugged town. Before the church’s establishment around 1700 by Dominican priests, the surrounding caves served as hideouts for dissident Mexica groups. Known as the Espinazo del Diablo, or “Devil’s Backbone,” these caves have yielded numerous pre-Hispanic artifacts, whispering stories of resistance and hidden rituals. The rugged terrain of San Pablo Chimalpa played a crucial role during Mexico’s fight for independence. Insurgents used the landscape to their advantage, harassing Royalist traffic on the Toluca road. Later, during the Mexican Revolution, the town’s isolation offered a degree of protection from the widespread conflict.

In 1862, San Pablo Chimalpa was formally combined with Acopilco, San Mateo Tlaltenango, and San Pedro Cuajimalpa to form a municipality. The town collectively purchased surrounding lands starting in 1913, further solidifying its presence in the region. Today, a modern PILARES cultural and arts center stands beside the historic church, bridging the past and the present. San Pablo Chimalpa offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city, a place where echoes of warriors and revolutionaries mingle with the quiet strength of a community rooted in history. The shields of the past guard the stories of San Pablo Chimalpa, inviting you to explore its crooked town center, listen to the whispers of its caves, and discover the spirit of a town that has endured through centuries of change.
