Nine giant eggs. That’s what greets you at Knocknock. These aren’t your average chicken eggs. Oh no. Knocknock in Newmarket Auckland is a whimsical public art installation. It’s a burst of colour and quirky charm.

Created by South Korean artist Seung Yul Oh Knocknock isn’t just pretty to look at. It’s a playful challenge to our perceptions. Each oversized fibreglass egg is a different vibrant colour. Orange red yellow turquoise black and white. They’re perched at various angles around Teed and Osborne Streets. You might even call them a surprise for the city.

Originally called Globgob the artwork was renamed Knocknock by the artist in 2017. It was commissioned in 2010. The Newmarket Arts Trust and the Newmarket Business Association made it happen. It’s a testament to the power of public art. It transforms the mundane into the magical.

The eggs themselves are more than just eye-catchers. They represent a recurring theme in Oh’s work. Circular and organic shapes. His signature humour brings a unique energy to Newmarket. Knocknock brightens up a busy shopping district. It makes you stop and smile. It makes you wonder.
