Peeking out from behind these trees rises the magnificent Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Its towers reach towards the heavens. This architectural marvel is a beacon of faith. It draws countless visitors each year. Let’s uncover the story of this iconic Buenos Aires landmark.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes is more than just a church. It is a sanctuary. Its design draws inspiration from the Sanctuary of Lourdes in France. The church’s history began with a statue. This statue of the Virgin of Lourdes arrived from Lyon France in 1921. It weighed 400 kg. Father Antonio Silbermann oversaw construction.
In October 1922 Bishop Francisco Alberti blessed the first stone. This was in the presence of Buenos Aires Governor Luis Cantilo. By the 1930s Father Jorge Neusch founded a kindergarten near the basilica. This later became the Escuela Primaria and Instituto Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Later in 1939 Father Enrique Tiscornia founded the Grupo Scout N° 24. They named it Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. It was right in front of the basilica.
Construction took about 45 years. The final touches occurred in 1967. In 1970 a library opened at the basilica entrance. In 1972 workers completed the central tower. They placed a cross atop it. This brought the basilica’s height to 72.5 meters.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes has two main architectural styles. The lower temple has a romantic design. The upper temple features neo Gothic architecture. The church stands 72 meters tall and 33 meters wide. The central tower rises to 74 meters. The cross adds another 4 meters.
Inside you can see images of saints and stained glass windows. They depict religious scenes. A magnificent altar features the image of Our Lady of Lourdes. Outside is the important gruta. It contains a stone from the original Gruta of Lourdes in France.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes hosts special events. Every February 11 thousands gather to celebrate the Virgen de Lourdes. The streets close. There are blessings processions and celebrations. People renew their devotion. The church becomes one of Argentina’s most visited. Masses take place in the lower and upper temples and the gruta.
In February 2003 the Iglesia de Lourdes hosted Raúl Omar Rossi’s funeral. Rossi was the bishop of San Martín. Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio now Pope Francis led the ceremony. Over 1500 people attended.
Many recognize the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes for its cultural significance. In 2023 Argentine singer Jairo performed at the gruta. The show lasted for 1 hour and 40 minutes. More than 3000 people came.
The story of Lourdes in Argentina began in 1910. Fathers Roman Heitmann and Godofredo Pierson arrived from Chile. They aimed to spread their message. This area was once called Santos Lugares de Jerusalem. Franciscan friars gave it the name in the 18th century.
Lourdes de Santos Lugares began with a miracle. In May 1911 a telegram arrived from Chile. It said Father Rafael Doussans was near death. Fathers Rafael Maubon and Roman Heitmann vowed to build a gruta. This would be in honor of the Virgin. The next day a telegram announced Father Rafael’s recovery.
Today the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes stands as a testament to faith perseverance and architectural vision. Its history is woven into the fabric of Santos Lugares. It continues to inspire and welcome visitors. It offers solace hope and a connection to something greater than ourselves.
