Hidden within the heart of Popotla lies Nuestra Señora del Pronto Socorro a church with a rich history. Its story isn’t just etched in stone but woven into the very fabric of this ancient neighborhood. Originally known as San Esteban Popotla this parish church stands as one of only five original settlements in Miguel Hidalgo.

For centuries before the current structure a hermitage stood on this very spot. Fray Bernardino de Sahagún mentioned it in his Historia general de las cosas de la Nueva España a testament to its enduring presence. The first iteration of the church was built around 1900. It was later replaced in the mid-20th century. It was then rededicated to the Virgin of Pronto Socorro. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe graces the east side.

The old San Esteban church met its end at the turn of the 20th century. But its legacy lives on. Think of the legendary Tree of the Victorious Night nearby. This area also held a long-lost graveyard. It supposedly included the very rock where Hernán Cortés wept after his defeat.

Nuestra Señora del Pronto Socorro’s modern structure reflects a desire for renewal. Popotla itself was once a modest colonial town. This is evidenced by the Merced de las Huertas chapel and an earlier one at the site of the San Antonio Temple. These reminders of an agricultural community highlight the area’s evolution. Today Popotla is renowned for its Victorian-era homes built at the turn of the 20th century. This era marked the flourishing of Villa Azcapotzalco and Tacuba when Santa María la Ribera and San Rafael also rose to prominence.

The church stands as a silent observer of this transformation. A neighborhood favorite it has witnessed centuries of change. It is a quiet symbol of faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Popotla. As you stand before Nuestra Señora del Pronto Socorro take a moment to appreciate its enduring legacy. Reflect on the layers of history that have shaped this place. Feel the connection to the past and the vibrant community it serves. This is more than a church. It is a living testament to the soul of Mexico City.
