Gedung C FMIPA witnessed a pivotal moment in 1987. That year, the Biology Department of FMIPA UI relocated to the UI Depok Campus, finding its new home within Gedung C FMIPA. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Indonesia has a rich history intertwined with the university itself. Originally known as the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FIPIA), it was first established in Bandung. In 1959, FIPIA UI in Bandung was handed over to the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). UI then planned to re-establish FIPIA in Jakarta. A committee, chaired by Drs. Lauw Soan Keng, was formed in May 1960 to explore this possibility. Gedung C FMIPA stands as a testament to this transition and growth. The Biology Department’s journey reflects this evolution. Initially situated in Bogor alongside the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Agriculture, the department eventually moved to Jakarta in 1978, occupying space on the Salemba 4 Campus. The move to Gedung C FMIPA in Depok marked another chapter in the department’s history, providing a dedicated space for its expanding programs. In 1993, a Master’s program in Biology was launched, followed by a Doctoral program in 1997. These milestones, housed within Gedung C FMIPA, solidified the department’s position as a center for advanced biological studies. Gedung C FMIPA is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the dedication and vision of those who shaped FMIPA UI and the Biology Department.
