Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Rio de Janeiro, Mirante da Bica whispers tales of a bygone era. Mirante da Bica, once part of a sprawling estate known as Fazenda da Bica, takes its name from a humble water source. This “bica,” or spout, channeled water from the highlands down to the road, quenching the thirst of locals for generations. Mirante da Bica and its surrounding land hold a rich history. In 1681, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony was built on the estate. The land became known as Engenho Santo Antônio da Bica, and later simply as Sítio Santo Antônio da Bica. The landscape, a mix of mangroves, restinga, and Atlantic Forest, remained largely untouched, protected by the nearby Pedra Branca State Park. In 1949, Roberto Burle Marx and his brother, Siegfried, acquired the first piece of this historic land. They sought a place with diverse soils, exposed rock formations, and plentiful water—a living laboratory for Roberto’s botanical passions. Over the years, they expanded their holdings, transforming the site into a vibrant sanctuary for plants. Nurseries flourished and gardens took shape, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the natural world. In 1985, recognizing the importance of his life’s work, Burle Marx gifted the Sítio to the Brazilian government. His vision was clear: to preserve this unique space for research, education, and the enjoyment of future generations. Following Burle Marx’s death in 1994, the Sítio came under the stewardship of the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). Today, Mirante da Bica stands as a testament to the power of vision and dedication. It offers a glimpse into the past while celebrating the enduring beauty of nature. As you gaze out at the breathtaking view, remember the flowing waters of the bica, the humble chapel, and the brothers who transformed this land into a living masterpiece.
