Nestled in the heart of Budapest, the Merlin Színház has always been more than just a theater. It’s a vibrant cultural hub. The Merlin Színház began its life in 1991, under the direction of Tamás Jordán and Kati Lázár. Originally housed in a beautiful Art Deco building on Gerlóczy Street, which once served as a trade hall, the Merlin Színház quickly established itself as a unique venue. It became home to the International Merlin Jazz Club, a meeting place for Budapest’s intellectual and cultural elite. The Merlin Színház also nurtured emerging theater companies, some of which, like the Krétakör, went on to achieve international acclaim. The theater hosted a variety of performances, from Hungarian productions to international acts like the Derevo and The Royal Shakespeare Company. Even Oscar-nominated actress Susannah York graced its stage. This helped establish English-language theater in Hungary. In 2004, Hungary joined the European Union. The Merlin Színház played a significant role in the bEUgró event series, celebrating this historic moment. This series showcased the diverse cultures of the newly joined nations, including theater, dance, music, visual arts, film, and literature. In 2005, José Manuel Barroso inaugurated the Merlin European Union Cultural Centre. This paved the way for the 2007 “Merlin Energia” project, which brought Nobel laureates and world-renowned artists to the theater. Merlin Energia explored energy-related themes through science lectures, discussions, and artistic performances, promoting environmental awareness. Although the Merlin Színház eventually moved to the Átrium ház on Margit körút in 2012, its legacy in its original location continues to resonate. It served as a crucial stepping stone for numerous artists. It fostered cultural exchange. It encouraged dialogue about important issues. It remains a testament to the power of art to connect people and inspire change.
