Have you ever felt the calm presence of a centuries-old temple? The 海寿寺, or Kaishoji Temple, here in Hiroshima is a testament to the enduring spirit of Japanese Buddhism. Its history stretches back hundreds of years. This temple is not only a place of worship, but also a cherished symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. The current building is relatively recent though, having been rebuilt in 1956. You see, in August 1945, during World War II, an atomic bomb devastated Hiroshima. Prior to this, in 1899, the temple was moved from a different location. Kaishoji Temple was destroyed then, but the community built it back up again, and the temple continues to play a vital role in the city’s spiritual life.
