A humble beginning. That’s how the story of the Fatimai Szűzanya-templom unfolds. This unassuming church in Budapest’s Soroksár-Újtelep district stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. Built where once stood only a small chapel this church’s history is one of humble beginnings and remarkable growth.

For decades the residents of Soroksár-Újtelep a district on the outskirts of Budapest longed for a proper church. Early attempts in 1929 and 1935 to build a church failed. The area was then part of Pestszentlőrinc. It was a poor and neglected part of the city. Its inhabitants were primarily factory workers. The distance to the existing churches posed a significant challenge.

In 1942 Bishop Hanauer Á István requested proposals to address the spiritual needs of the community. The solution a self-sufficient religious instruction program was initially deemed necessary. A rented apartment doubled as a chapel from 1945. Mass was celebrated there. The Blessed Sacrament was also kept there.

The Fatimai Szűzanya-templom’s true story however begins much later. The church that stands before us today was a dream realized decades after the first attempts. In 1996 a significant agreement paved the way for the new church’s construction. The land was finally allocated. This event involved Budapest XXIII District’s local government. The Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese played a crucial role.

The design by architect Marosi Gábor a pilgrim to Fatima himself reflects this history. Construction began in May 2000. It concluded in October 2002. Cardinal Paskai László consecrated the church. The church’s interior is beautifully appointed. It features stained-glass windows. There is a carved wooden sculpture group depicting the Fatima apparition. A carved wooden crucifix with a corpus is another highlight. The church quickly became the heart of the community.

Today the Fatimai Szűzanya-templom serves as a parish church. It’s a vibrant center of religious and community life. It hosts various groups. These include choirs prayer groups and the Blessed Sacrament society. The church stands as a symbol of hope and faith. It’s a lasting testament to a community’s resilience. Its simple beginning blossomed into a beautiful edifice. The church bears witness to the enduring power of faith. It’s a place of worship and community bonding. It welcomes all who seek solace or fellowship. This unassuming building boasts a rich story reflecting the aspirations of the people of Soroksár-Újtelep.
