The Shirley Library stands tall, proud, and rather imposing on Wickham Road in Croydon. Its smooth, light-colored facade, adorned with large windows, hints at the wealth of knowledge contained within. The Shirley Library serves as a vital community hub, a haven for bookworms and learners of all ages. The building has a rich history, having been a temporary structure when erected in 1937, serving the local community for over 80 years. It wasn’t always here, though. Built in 1890 as the first branch library of Croydon, its initial location was deemed unfortunate, and a mere 14 years later, it closed due to lack of interest. The original library, which faced a similar fate, was located in the same district but wasn’t built on Wickham Road, it was on a different street, as the library was erected before this busy boulevard was developed. In the 1980s, a children’s library was added to the existing building, providing a dedicated space for young minds to explore the wonders of reading. Although the exterior may seem unassuming, its interior holds a treasure trove of books and resources, welcoming visitors to come inside for a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Stepping across its threshold today, you enter not only a space filled with knowledge but also a building rich in history. The Shirley Library has stood as a beacon of learning for over a century, and it will no doubt continue to do so long into the future.
