A house of faith stands here today. It is the Ranui Samoan Assembly of God. This church is a beacon of hope and community. It is rooted in rich history and tradition.

Let’s explore the story of the Samoan Assemblies of God in New Zealand. The Ranui Samoan Assembly of God is part of this movement. It began in the early 1960s. Samoan migrants brought Pentecostalism to New Zealand.

The late Reverend Makisua Fatialofa and his wife Evangelist Mauosamoa were pioneers. Also, the late Reverend Dr. Samani Pulepule with his wife Sapapalii were important figures. The late Reverend Fereti Ama and his wife Lady Leausuone were foundation members too. These individuals helped the Assemblies of God grow in New Zealand. It became the nation’s fastest-growing church.

By 2005, there were 89 Samoan Assemblies of God congregations in New Zealand. Some members wanted self-governance. This led to a split within the Samoan fellowship. In late November 2005, 45 churches formed a breakaway group. Over 80 churches are now in this group. Forty churches remained under the Assemblies of God in New Zealand. Presently, this group has over 70 churches. Both Samoan fellowships still work together despite the split.

The newly established movement was under the leadership of the Late Dr. Samani Pulepule. He served as the General Superintendent since the 1960s. His position extended internationally. He was also the Worldwide Chairman of the Samoan Assemblies of God International Fellowship. Dr. Pulepule retired in 2011 after over 40 years of service. In early winter 2013, he and his wife passed away within a week of each other.

In 2012, Reverend Motu Mati’a and his wife Silaumua were elected to lead the National Church. More changes occurred in 2016. The movement is now under the direction of the newly elected General Superintendent. That is The Most Reverend Tafuna’i Muaiava and his wife Vaepa.

The Samoan congregations who remained elected Reverend Aila’ula’u Faletutulu. He became the new Samoan representative. This group of churches is known as the Assemblies of God in New Zealand.

The Samoan Assemblies of God in New Zealand is not the same as the Assembly of God Church of Samoa in New Zealand. This other group of 27 churches left in 1974. A local minister wanted Samoan churches run by Samoan people. He formed an independent group. This group has 22 churches in Australia and one in Samoa.

The Ranui Samoan Assembly of God and other Samoan Assemblies of God share core beliefs. These beliefs are summarized in the Statement of Fundamental Truths. The Bible is inspired by God. There is one true God in the Trinity. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Man was created good but separated from God through sin. Salvation comes through repentance and faith.

The Samoan Assemblies of God consider four beliefs central. These are salvation, baptism in the Holy Spirit, divine healing, and the Second Coming of Christ.

The Ranui Samoan Assembly of God is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community. It is a place of worship. It is a testament to the faith and resilience of Samoan people in New Zealand. Its history is intertwined with the broader story. It reflects the Samoan Assemblies of God movement. It shows its growth, divisions, and enduring spirit.
