Right here, in the heart of West Campus, a simple plaque stands on a pole. It tells the story of the Gerhard-Schoch House, a home that witnessed nearly a century of Austin history. The house is celebrated as the first brick-veneered structure in the city. It was built in 1887 for a merchant named Philip Gerhard. In 1912, his daughter, Clara, and her husband, a prominent University of Texas professor, Eugene Schoch, inherited the home and resided there until 1955. For more than a century, the Gerhard family resided in this home and carefully preserved it. Since then, three more generations have called 2212 Nueces home, carrying on the family’s legacy and contributing to Austin’s rich history. This simple plaque holds a fascinating story of generations, a testament to the resilience of a single family and their enduring impact on this city.
